Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
Colossians 4:5‭-‬6 NIV

In this day and age where everyone has a billion things on their mind, it’s hard to really slow down in order to give someone a second of your time, let alone someone you don’t know. But as I read this scripture something about it just resonated on my heart.

Once upon a time I used to be selectively friendly,  I would open up to some people and not to others. But as I started getting older and kept being exposed to random people who would willingly spill the details of their life to me at the Kona Grill bar, I began to realize that too often, people just need someone to talk to. Some people just need a friendly hello or a nice complement to make their day. It’s hard to pause an already busy day when random people want to make small talk but sometimes we just have to (if we’re moved to). We have to remember that we are the salt of the world (Mt 5:13) and take advantage of any given opportunity to bring light into someone’s darkness. But doing this doesn’t necessarily always mean preach to them. The way we treat strangers whether we speak to them or not, is also a form of being a light to the world (Matthew 5:16).

Everyday is a new opportunity to show someone the kind of love Jesus has for us. Whether friend or foe, we should use our lips to only speak what is good so the glory of the Lord can be seen through us. Seasoned Christians especially, should do this since we are always being watched because of the good news we speak of and of the power of love that we sometimes fail to show. We preach forgiveness but sometimes struggle to receive it. And it’s not that we are bad people that puts us under the microscope, it’s because of what we seek to share. We seek to share something so wonderful that though it is devalued by society, it still does a work on people’s hearts which makes them not want to hear it even more. Therefore, we should never let the criticism of others keep us from doing what we were sent to do. We should never let the unconformability of a non believer filled work place or the sarcasm of a scorned ex Christian friend keep us from using grace as a way to spread the gospel.

As we go about our days working, attending classes, etc, we must remember that the word of God is to holy to contradict. We must beware of our actions and the words that leave our mouth because we are living, breathing, walking examples of Gods love. Our every move is weighed and if not watched carefully can bring about more harm and confusion than salvation. Though we do not lead a congregation of five hundred, we still however, are held as ambassadors in HIS sight. So as we leave our homes to go to our various destinations, let us apply the wisdom that we are so kindly given, to every situation. Let us train our eyes to view random encounters with people as opportunities to speak life into their lives. Let us not depend on the vast knowledge we wish we had or the theology class we’ve been taking to do the work for us, instead let us pray that the Holy Spirit will be the one to move through us. Let us start our day knowing that we hold the light and the truth within us and steer away from thoughts or actions that will make us feel as if we are unable to share it. 🙂
